Pressed glass (or pattern glass) is a type of glass manufactured by using a plunger to press molten glass into a plain or engraved metal mold. This technique allows for the rapid and uniform production of pieces with intricate designs, distinguishing itself from blown glass by its greater thickness and the presence of mold seams where the parts of the mold meet.
Manufacturing Process
while hand-pressing has existed for over a thousand years, the industrial version was patented in 1825 by the American inventor John P. Bakewell to manufacture furniture knobs. The modern process includes:
- Gob formation: A specific amount of molten glass (gob) is cut and dropped into the mold.
- Pressing: A plunger or punch descends, forcing the liquid glass to fill all the cavities of the mold.
- Annealing: The piece is cooled slowly in an annealing lehr to release internal stresses and prevent breakage.
Common Applications and Uses
This method is ideal for manufacturing objects that require thick walls and repetitive patterns.
- Tableware: Plates, serving dishes, ashtrays, heavy-walled glasses, and jars.
- Decoration and Construction: Furniture knobs, glass blocks, headlight lenses, and lighting components.
- Specialized Craftsmanship: In Mexico, the La Luz factory in Puebla preserves the green pressed glass technique, a tradition spanning nearly 90 years.
